Fire Up the Grill and Celebrate National Cheeseburger Day

On September 18, celebrate National Cheeseburger Day and football season with homemade burgers. These recipes are simple and can be made on and off the grill. So fire up the grill and toast some buns — it’s time for a burger!

Classic Cheeseburger
Recipe from Martha Stewart

Ingredients
2 pounds ground beef, preferably chuck
2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
3 ounces cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese, sliced 1/4 inch thick
4 hamburger buns
2 tomatoes (12 ounces), sliced
8 leaves Bibb lettuce (1 small head)
1 small red onion, sliced

Instructions
Heat a grill or grill pan to medium-high. Season meat with salt and pepper and shape into four patties. Grill hamburgers 4 to 6 minutes per side for rare and 9 to 11 minutes for well done. If making cheeseburgers, lay cheese slices on top of the hamburgers after they have been flipped. Top with garnishes.

Bacon Beef Burgers

Ingredients
1 lb. 50/50 bacon burger mix or 1/2 lb. lean ground beef and 1/2 lb. ground bacon
4 hamburger buns, toasted
4 slices Pepper Jack or Cheddar cheese
Toppings that you desire

Instructions
Place the burger mix or beef and bacon into a large bowl and season with salt and pepper. Mix to combine and form the meat into 4 patties. Heat the grill to medium heat.

Grill the patties for 5-6 minutes on each side.

Place cheese slices on top of patties one minute before the burgers are done, and let melt.

Remove burgers from the grill, and serve with your desired toppings between two pieces of toasted buns.

Burgers with Cheddar, Avocado, and Sprouts
Recipe from Real Simple

Ingredients
1 ¼ pounds ground chuck (85 percent lean or less)
Kosher salt and black pepper
Canola oil, for the grill
ounces Cheddar, sliced
slices multigrain bread
1/2 cup mayonnaise
leaves red leaf lettuce
avocado, sliced
1/2 cup alfalfa or radish sprouts

Instructions
Oil the grill and cook the patties for 4 to 5 minutes. Flip and cook until an instant-read thermometer inserted in the center registers 155° F for medium, 4 to 5 minutes more. Top the burgers with the Cheddar during the last 3 minutes of cooking. Spread the bread with the mayonnaise. Put together burgers with the bread, lettuce, burgers, avocado, and sprouts.
