Five Ways to Celebrate National Literacy Day

September 8 marks International Literacy Day — a time to celebrate the joys of reading and raise awareness of those without access to education. Here are a few ways to celebrate International Literacy Day in your community.

Visit and volunteer at the library.
Find your local library and volunteer! Whether it’s reading to children or working at the information desk, there’s always a way to volunteer at a library. Not only will this serve your community, you’ll meet friends and neighbors who are also passionate about local literacy.

Find an organization.
There are several worldwide and national literacy organizations looking for volunteers and donations. Reading Is Fundamental is the largest nonprofit children’s literacy program. Jumpstart trains college students and community volunteers to serve preschool-aged children in low-income neighborhoods. National Center for Families Learning focuses on reading programs for the entire family. Find an organization that resonates with you, and then decide how to serve the nonprofit.

Form a book club.
If you enjoy reading and discussing books, then start your own book club! Start with one book, and then graduate to studying a series or a genre. Gather a group of like-minded friends or promote the club on social media. Then sit down and let the conversations begin!

Start a neighborhood library.
You may have seen the “take a book, leave a book” movement popularized by the Little Free Library. You can build your own neighborhood library by creating a book drop in your community. A neighborhood book drop requires little effort, but reaps high reward.

Read with your child.
It almost seems too simple, but it couldn’t be more important. Read with your child every night. Tell him or her why it’s important and pleasurable to read. Also, create a reading-rich environment in your home by collecting different books.
