How to Solve Your Winter Skin Issues
Each winter, cooler temperatures and harsher wind wreak havoc on the skin. That’s why it’s important to develop a daily regimen that nourishes your skin all season. Follow these simple steps to save your skin during the winter.
Make Moisturizer a Must
Make sure you’re applying plenty of moisturizer to your skin each morning. For your face, look for a moisturizer that won’t clog your pores with oils or harmful particles. Dermatologists suggest choosing a moisturizer that contains natural plant oils. To protect your skin from the sun, look for a moisturizer with at least 25 SPF. Find a moisturizer with antioxidants, as this will prevent damage caused from free radicals. Moisturizers with vitamins and green tea extract help nourish and protect your skin.
For your hands and body, choose a moisturizer that will leave your skin looking healthy and glowing. If you’re struggling with dry skin, find a body lotion that contains Aloe and essential oils. If you have oily skin, choose a lighter lotion. To lock in your body’s moisture, apply your lotion as soon as you get out of the shower. This will leave your skin feeling soft and supple all day.
Don’t Skip Sunscreen
Although it’s not sunny, it’s important to apply sunscreen in the winter. This season, the sun can reflect off of snow and cause skin damage. Find a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF and apply it your skin at least 30 minutes before going outside. Cover all of the skin that is exposed to the sun. While you’re outside, reapply sunscreen every two hours.
Ditch the Dry Lips
Avoid dry, chapped lips by caring for your lips in the winter. Be sure you’re exfoliating your lips with a store-bought or homemade scrub. If you’re making your own lip scrub, mix Vaseline, honey, and sugar. After applying the scrub for a few minutes, rub it off with a warm towel. Repeat three to four times per week, as necessary.
Don’t forget to apply lip balm throughout the day. Apply an extra layer of lip balm at night, and you’ll wake up with smooth lips. Keep lip balm in your purse so you can moisturize your lips while working or running errands.
Win with Water
If you want healthy skin, you must hydrate. You should drink at least eight glasses of water a day, but more if you exercise or drink caffeine. Drinking water increases the blood flow to the skin, making your face glow. If your skin looks dull, then pour yourself a glass of water. Remember, as soon as you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. Consistent dehydration damages your skin and overall health. So drink up!
Pick the Perfect Pillow
If you’re taking all of these steps and still struggling with skin issues, then consider changing your pillowcase. Make sure you’re washing your pillowcase regularly — the oils and dirt that collect on your pillowcase may cause skin irritation or acne. If you don’t have time to wash your pillowcase, then switch it to the other side. Also, consider changing your pillowcase’s material. Skin experts say that switching to a silk pillowcase will help your skin look its best. Because silk is an all-natural material, it doesn’t harm your skin while you sleep.
