To narrow down the list, a good idea is to identify museums with exhibits for the ages of your kids, or on topics that interest your children. Chicago’s Children Museum is great for the younger kids with play spaces, tree houses to climb, tinkering labs, art studios and story-time hubs. For the school-age crowd, Adler Planetarium has interactive exhibits on space, space exploration, and our solar system. And, the Museum of Science and Industry offers something for everyone. It is the largest science museum in the Western Hemisphere with exhibits for specific age categories making it easy to design your visit including exhibits on Lego-Building, American’s National Parks, Sharks, Historical Submarines, Flight and Ride Simulators and many more.

Popular Indoor Attractions in Chicago

Two of the city’s best and most popular indoor attractions for kids are Shedd’s Aquarium and the Field Museum where a family could easily get lost for an entire afternoon. At Shedd’s Aquarium, kids and adults can look at 32,500 different animals from 1,500 different species, or check out one of the aquatic shows. The Field Museum has changing exhibits throughout the year on everything from dinosaurs and prehistoric times to ancient Egyptian artifacts and the Ice Age. It offers interactive technology exhibits and 3D films on special topics that will sure to delight kids and adults alike.

Top Outdoor Attractions in Chicago

If you’d prefer to keep the kids entertained outside, two of the city’s best options are Millennium Park and the Navy Pier. Millennium Park offers something for each season: splash fountains to keep cool in the summer heat: springtime tours in the Lurie Garden to see butterflies, flowers and dragonflies; or, ice skating in McCormick Tribune Ice Rink. And, countless photos are taken in front of “The Bean”, a reflective, stainless steel structure known as Cloud Gate that gives you a view of the entire park. Head over to the Navy Pier to get your adrenaline rushing on the Ferris Wheel, Carousel or Wave Ride. Navy Pier also has Segway tours, IMAX theaters, and restaurants.
