Learn how to unclog a sink in this Invitation Homes "Know Your Home" video.
Hello, I’m Shawna with Invitation Homes and today we’re going to talk about how to fix a clogged sink. Most clogs can be taken care of right here in the j trap on your drain pipe. This is also where you’ll want to look for something that was accidentally dropped down the sink, such as a ring. J traps have two nuts that hold the j trap in place. When they are metal, you may have to use a large set of channel lock pliers to loosen them. Plastic PVC pipes like this one can usually be loosened by hand. You’ll want to keep a bucket or pan in place under the trap to catch the water that will drain from the trap when removing. Once the trap is removed, you can easily clean out anything clogging the line.
Put the j trap back on and tighten each of the nuts by hand. Try not to over tighten. It doesn’t take much to get a water-tight seal on the drain. Once the j trap has been reinstalled, test the line by running water in the sink and watching to make sure there are no leaks. Leaks can sometimes be hard to spot. A helpful method is to place a paper towel below the j trap when running water. Any drops will be easily visible when they hit the paper towel. As regular maintenance, it’s not a bad idea to use a drain cleaner every couple of months. Or you can use one half-cup of baking soda and one half-cup of white vinegar. Wait ten minutes and flush with hot water.
