Clogged Toilets

Learn how to unclog a toilet in this Invitation Homes "Know Your Home" video.

Hi, I’m Shawna with Invitation Homes, and today, we’re going to talk about how to fix a clogged toilet.

First, lift the tank lid and pull up on the float ball to keep the toilet from overflowing. Then, while keeping the float ball held up, turn off the water supply valve to the toilet. The water shut-off valve is located on the left-hand side of the toilet on the water line coming out of the wall. Simply turn the knob clockwise to the right to turn off the water. If water threatens to spill out of the bowl, locate a bucket and bail out about 1/4 of the water into the bucket.

One thing to keep in mind is that plungers operate using the sucking action on the drain not the pushing action. Slowly push the plunger down and then pull it back with some force. You may have to repeat the process several times in order to clear the clog. If you turned the water off earlier, you’ll need to turn the water back on by turning the water shut-off knob counterclockwise to the left. Be ready to shut the water back off and to repeat the process if the toilet still remains clogged.
