Fall into a New Fitness Routine
It’s easier to work out in the summer, when the weather is warm and the sky is sunny. But it’s harder to exercise in the fall and winter, when the days are shorter and the temperatures are cooler. To keep your workouts consistent and effective, you have to make a plan. Here are a few tips to adjusting to the new season of your workout.
Get Your Gear.
Find exercise clothes that keep the heat inside your body. Look for long-sleeve, heat-regulating shirts that you can layer under a fleece jacket. Find thermal pants that are lightweight and comfortable. If you live in an area that sees a lot of rain, then look for waterproof workout clothes. When exercising in extreme weather, wear gloves, headbands, and thick socks. Warm and cozy clothes will encourage you to work out in the colder months.
Find a New Workout.
When cold weather hits you may not be able to exercise like you could in the summer. Instead of running outside, join a gym and run on a treadmill. Or change your work out; find an indoor facility with a climbing wall, swimming pool, or ballet bar. The new season is the perfect time to try something new: enroll in dance classes, take kickboxing, or try tai chi.
Set a New Schedule.
Your summer workout schedule may not work for the colder months. Instead of jogging after work, go in the morning. Find a fitness class you can take in the early mornings. Or try doing a light exercise class during your lunch break. A short workout is better than no workout.
Exercise at Home.
If severe weather prevents you from driving to the gym or a fitness class, then find a routine to do at home. This could be yoga, Pilates, or boxing. Hold yourself accountable by setting a schedule for your workout.
Set Real Goals.
Avoid falling into a workout rut by making real goals. These can be long-term goals like training for a half-marathon, or short-term goals like working out five days a week. If you are trying to lose weight, then set a goal of losing a certain number of pounds per week.
Make a Playlist.
Oftentimes a workout is only as good as your soundtrack. Motivate yourself by compiling a powerful playlist that encourages you to run, bike, or walk. Your playlist will help you push past freezing temperatures, cold rain, and harsh winds. And you’ll finish your workout feeling strong and accomplished.
Dehydration isn’t a danger specific to the summertime. In the winter your body is conserving heat to maintain its body temperature. It’s important to stay hydrated so your body can function effectively. So even if you’re not sweating, keep sipping water.
Score Some Sleep.
Avoid seasonal illnesses by getting plenty of sleep. This will help you feel recharged and refreshed, encouraging you to maintain a consistent workout regimen. A healthy sleep cycle will also help ward off the winter blues.
