Get This Look from the Make it Home Show House: Guest Room Edition

Having dual purpose spaces is always important. It’s even more important if you have limited space. As a part of our Make it Home Show House, Brittni Mehlhoff of Paper and Stitch designed a gorgeous guest room that doubles as a home office.

Brittni lives a leasing lifestyle and knows the importance of making your house feel like your home even if you don’t own it. She wanted to make sure that even though this guest space is serving two purposes, it’s not lacking comfort. She went with a full bed size to maximize the relaxation space. She then made a simple bed frame feel more elegant and chic with a budget-friendly, DIY headboard made out of a wood panel art board. This headboard is a great opportunity to customize your space with a focal point. Try painting with a bold color, use peel-and-stick wallpaper with a funky pattern or write your favorite quote with a metallic marker.

Brittni used an earth tone color palette to give the room a relaxing and soothing feel. The cozy throw pillows on the bed add balance to the hard lines of the wooden headboard. She also used one of her DIY pillows that she made out of cloth napkins. See how she made it here!

A really special feature in this room is the light wood desk that Brittni made herself! She wanted to fully customize this working space and make sure there was plenty of storage and surface space. The end result is a real wow-moment in this space. Read about the technique she used here.

Above the desk is a peg rail organizer that creates vertical storage space, perfect for smaller rooms. She styled the area with simple art prints that add interest but still keep with the calm energy of the room.

Brittni used a floor-length mirror to mimic a window and bring more light into the room. She continues with the natural theme by adding a variegated plant in a simple planter. For the window treatment, she used simple linen curtains and paired them with a $5 DIY curtain rod. Read how she did it here. Another fun DIY project Brittni incorporated into her space was the vintage, cane back desk chair that she reupholstered. Reupholstering furniture is a quick fix to breathe new life into any piece.

A lesser known lease-friendly tip is switching out your light fixtures. As long as you keep the original fixtures, you can install your own to better match your personal style. Brittni used an unglazed terra cotta fixture that really tied the whole space together.

We hope this space inspires you to try your own lease-friendly, DIY projects. Be sure to check out our Make it Home Design Forecast for more ideas from our Make it Home design experts.
