How to Stay Healthy & Happy During the Holidays

You want to feel your best during the holidays. But between traveling and shopping, skipping workouts, and eating heavy meals, it’s difficult to stay healthy. This holiday season, you can stay healthy and happy by following these simple steps.

Don’t Shy Away from the Shot
Flu season hits around the holidays, but you can avoid getting sick by getting your flu shot. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one study showed that the flu vaccination was associated with a 71% reduction in flu-related hospitalizations among adults of all ages during the 2011-2012 flu season. Stay safe and get your shot.

Win with Water
It’s just as important to stay hydrated in the winter as it is in the summer. Dehydration leads to fatigue, illness, and stress. If that doesn’t convince you to refill your water bottle, consider this: drinking plenty of water can help you keep off extra weight. Also, if you’re traveling on an airplane, be sure to stay hydrated. Drink eight ounces of water for every hour you spend on a plane. You’ll feel better when you land.

Don’t Veto Vitamins
Ward off winter illness by taking vitamins. Be sure to take vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin D, iron, and calcium. Vitamin C will boost your immune system; vitamin A will help your organs function properly; vitamin D will keep you healthy without summer sunlight. Iron will keep you energized, and calcium will protect your bones.

Wipe and Wash Your Hands
There’s a reason doctors — and your mom — encouraged you to wash your hands. This simple step will kill germs and help keep you healthy. You should wash your hands after using the restroom, before eating, after coughing and sneezing, and before cooking. Keep antibacterial lotion in your purse to use when you’re shopping.

Get Excited about Exercise
It’s easy to forget about exercise during the holidays. But you’ll feel better when you maintain a fitness routine. If it’s too cold to exercise outside, hit the gym. If it’s too dark to exercise after work, do your cardio in the morning. Find more fitness tips by reading this article from the Invitation Homes blog. Remember, a short workout is better than no exercise.

Practice Portion Control
Staying healthy during the holidays doesn’t mean you have to give up your favorite treats. Just plan ahead to prevent overeating. If you’re going to eat a heavy meal, make it earlier in the day. Fill your plate with your favorite dishes, but keep the serving sizes small.

Sneak in Some Snacks
Avoid overeating by packing a few healthy snacks, such as an apple, crackers, string cheese, or a granola bar. Eating a small snack will curb your appetite, helping you make smart choices when it’s time to celebrate.

Score Some Sleep
Make sure you’re getting enough rest during the holidays. Adequate sleep will help you stay healthy all season. Getting plenty of sleep will help prevent you from overeating at holiday parties.
