What to Expect at The Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament
The month of July is known for fireworks, red, white, and blue, and Independence Day celebrations to honor our great country. But after all the sparklers have burned out and the hot dogs have been eaten, the citizens of Jacksonville are gearing up for a different kind of celebration.
For the past 38 years, Jacksonville has been home to one of the largest fishing competitions in the nation, The Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament. This year, the tournament takes place July 16-21, and professional and amateur anglers alike will gather at the Jim King Park & Boat Ramp at Sister Creek for friendly competition and a chance to win the grand prize!
The week will be filled with family, friends, fun and, of course, tons of fish! Check out some of the fun things you can find at this year’s Kingfish Tournament!
With more than 300 boats registered to compete, the GJKT offers four different tournaments to accommodate everyone wishing to participate. The Redfish Tournament kicks off the competition on Saturday, followed by the Junior Angler Tournament. For those aspiring anglers who don’t have their own boat, a Junior Angler Dock Tournament is available the same day. The General Tournament has the largest participation and will take place Thursday and Friday.
Whether you’re casting out or showing your support, fish weigh-ins are highly anticipated all weekend long. Anglers have the opportunity to display their heartiest catch of the day while spectators admire their work. This year the fish will be weighed with a hanging scale, so the public will have priceless photo opportunities.
