How to keep your dryer vent and filter clean

What are my dryer vent and lint filter?  

Dryer vent: The dryer vent is the ductwork that carries hot, moist air from your dryer to the outside. It's typically a tube running from the back of your dryer to an exterior vent. Its main job is to expel the warm, damp air produced during drying. 

Lint filter: The lint filter is a screen or trap inside your dryer. Its purpose is to catch lint and debris produced during the drying cycle, preventing them from entering the dryer vent. Regular cleaning of the lint filter ensures efficient airflow and reduces fire risk. 

Follow this simple guide to clean these parts and keep your dryer in top-notch shape. 

1. Unplug and shut off the gas supply (if applicable): First, unplug your dryer. Safety first, right? If you've got a gas unit, make sure to turn off the supply valve. 

2. Give your dryer some space: Gently pull your dryer away from the wall. While you're at it, detach the vent hose. It's like letting your dryer take a deep breath. 

3. Tackle the exhaust port: Now, let's get to the nitty-gritty. Loosen up any debris hanging around the exhaust port. Grab your trusty vacuum and suck up those unwanted bits. 

4. Check the outside vent and flap: Venture outside and clear away any obstructions from the dryer vent and flap. We want that hot air to flow freely. Think of it as opening a window for your dryer. 

5. Reconnect and power up: It's time to bring it all back together. Reattach the vent hose and push your dryer back into place. Plug it in, and if it's gas, turn the supply valve back on. We're all hooked up and ready to roll.
